Meet Peter

Peter StevensonSince moving to Burlingame 30 years ago, I’ve been actively involved in efforts to expand programs in our schools, enriching the educational experience for our kids; driven fundraising efforts to support our Burlingame Parks and Recreation Department, including the new Community Center; and coached youth sports programs for more than 15 years.

We live in an amazing community, however, face significant issues and challenges that require thoughtful leadership and creative solutions. We need to actively guide the path forward, working to protect what is precious while pursuing solutions that will continue to enhance all our lives.

I stand for clean safe neighborhoods, a rational approach to traffic and affordable housing, partnerships with our schools, support of our business community, access for seniors and the disabled, and overall fiscal responsibility.

I care deeply about our community and pledge to work tirelessly on behalf the residents of District 5 and our entire Burlingame Community.

I’m honored to be running for Burlingame City Council and appreciate your support!

District 5 Priorities

Transportation, Traffic & Safety

There are several projects under design and study currently in our area that will certainly impact our District 5 neighborhood and Burlingame overall. These include the joint Burlingame and Caltrain planned project for grade separation at the Broadway intersection and the San Mateo City U.S. HWY 101 / Peninsula Ave Interchange Project. These projects are moving forward and it will be important to build relationships and work to influence their outcomes where ever possible. Furthermore, with increased traffic in general, the safety of our streets for pedestrians and bicyclists needs to remain a top priority for our community.

Environment

Efforts to reduce overall carbon footprint are not only good business but also critical to our continued quality of life. I want Burlingame to lead the charge across bay area communities when it comes to initiatives and programs that address climate change and other environmental priorities. This means protecting the bay front ecosystem, improved public transportation options and fewer overall cars, green-focused building codes, and alternative energy adoption for the city.

Affordable Housing Needs

Significant affordability issues face many in our community (teachers, city employees, service industry workers, retired community) and we need to take a holistic approach to address this challenge. This includes exploring ways to increase the supply of affordable housing options – both rental and entry level home ownership – as well as creative solutions to help avoid displacement of those already in established apartments.

Age Friendly Community

Populations across the peninsula are getting older. By 2030 it is estimated the 30% of the population in the San Francisco Bay Area will be over the age of 60. This is up from only 19% in 2020. As we consider plans across land use, development, transportation and safety, and recreational opportunities, it will be important for us to embrace and incorporate age-friendly thinking.

Enhanced Recreational Opportunities

As a member of the Burlingame Parks & Recreation Foundation Board I am passionate about efforts to expand recreational opportunities for our community. This includes efforts to expand programs for adults, teens and youth, additional recreational facilities, as well as ensuring adequate shared space in all commercial development planning.

Our Local Businesses

Our local businesses are a big part of the heart and soul of Burlingame and why our downtown districts are such a desired shopping and entertainment destination across the broader Bay Area.  They also provide a meaningful source of employment across the community. We need to continue to support these businesses while promoting a diversity of service, product and experience options for all residents.

Our Schools

I believe the educational options and overall quality of schools here in Burlingame – both public and private – are foundational to the success of our city. As a former President of BCE, BIS PTA, and Washington Elementary Dad’s Club – I’ve actively supported efforts to expand education programs and improve the educational experience for our kids. While the city does not have any administrative responsibility for our schools, a strong relationship is vital and I will work hard to support collaboration and coordination between the city and our educational leaders.
